Matthew (Matt) Ezell, a bright Exxon Mobil manager, is a Houston family man. Whether it be golf, basketball, or any other sport, Matt was right alongside his eager children and wife for a bonding experience. With their four young children Archer, Preston, Reesey, Cooper, and wife Chelsea, there was never a dull moment. Unfortunately, things changed after an unfortunate diagnosis.
Matt first learned about his primary lateral sclerosis (PLS) diagnosis in January of 2022. While overseas in the Middle East, he was playing tennis when he fell into the net and dislocated his shoulder. Following treatment, he knew something wasn’t right.
“After surgery I noticed it was kind of hard to stand up from bed and I did not feel normal.” Ezell said. He later received his diagnosis of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) in June of 2023.
Matt was familiar with ALS as his wife sold medical communication devices for six years. During this time, she worked with predominantly the ALS population.
“I knew enough to know it was dangerous from her experience.”
When Matt first learned about his PLS diagnosis, he turned to the ALS Association for support. The association has provided Ezell with ramps, grab bars, and more through the Durable Medical Equipment Program.
Matt is currently participating in a clinical trial at Houston Methodist to in the pursuit of identifying symptom-mitigating, life-extending medications. He attends clinic at Baylor College of Medicine where he sees Dr. James Peter Orengo. The two have collaborated to establish a proactive, holistic treatment plan for Matt.
“I think a lot of people live with my understanding pre-diagnosis of ALS, that ALS is really bad, and it kills you but not much else.” Ezell said. “I’m excited to raise awareness of the ALS Association. I’m excited to have my family and friends at the event to get more educated on the disease and learn how they can support.”
Matt continues to navigate the complexities of ALS with the support of his friends, family, and church.
Matt will be sharing his story at the 2024 Shoot Out ALS Houston event. Your support can help serve even more people impacted by ALS like the Ezell family. Join us March 1st for sporting clay shoot, dinner, and auction to help us defeat ALS.
